Frequently Asked Questions About Gutter Guards

1.What is the GutterBrush Gutter Guard?
The GutterBrush Gutter Guard system consists of filling the entire gutter with 3 foot lengths of self-positioning GutterBrush, and leaving them in place; the brush keeps debris out and keeps the gutter from clogging while the water flows between the bristles.   Each length of GutterBrush is a flexible bottle brush with stiff black bristles.  For a more technical description, the GutterBrush Gutter Guard is a cylinder shaped, twisted in wire, polypropylene black brush with double UV protection. The center core of GutterBrush Gutter Guard is 12 Gauge Galvanized Steel. Available in 5 diameters ranging from 3.25 inches for small specialty gutters up to 8 inches for large Industrial gutters. GutterBrush Gutter Guard is a simple, effective, and affordable way to get year round gutter protection.
2. How does the GutterBrush Gutter Guard work?
When placed in a rain gutter or eavestroughs, stiff Black GutterBrush Gutter Guard bristles fill the entire rain gutter or eavestroughs from "end to end" and provide year round gutter protection by preventing leaves and other debris from accumulating in the rain gutter or eavestroughs and impeding water flow. Water continues to flow freely into the rain gutter or eavestroughs, through the gutter guard bristles,  and down the drain pipe or downspout.
3. Why do I need the GutterBrush Gutter Guard?
GutterBrush is the simplest easiest way to keep gutters from clogging. Rain gutter helmets, covers, gutter screens, meshes, leaf filters, reverse curves, perforations, louvers, fine screens, slits, slots & combinations of the above have never done what the GutterBrush simple gutter guard can do: protect your rain gutter or eavestroughs and keep all the debris out of the rain gutter channel all year round while keeping the water flowing. Helmets, covers and screens are very expensive and they eventually do clog requiring expensive disassembly. They are notorious for creating a flat mat of debris laying on top, which causes the rain water to bypass and miss the gutter altogether.   The GutterBrush Gutter Guard eliminates clogged and overflowing rain gutter systems that contribute to rot and water damage of the soffit, trim, sills,  landscaping, walls, fascia boards, foundation, basement, and crawl spaces. Other systems are very expensive and complicated to install, however GutterBrush is self-positioning and installs quickly and easily with no tools and no fasteners.  Anyone who works on ladders or cleans gutters, can install GutterBrush quickly and easily; and if necessary, GutterBrush is easily maintained and renewed for long lasting continued performance. Get your mind out of the gutter and put this tedious task to rest by installing the GutterBrush Gutter Guard today.
4. Will leaves and other debris get caught in the gutter guards bristles?
If debris rests on your roof, the same may be the case with GutterBrush until the wind blows it off so don’t panic! Leaves and debris may be temporarily caught in the top of the gutter guard bristles, but with continual cycles of rain, sun and wind, combined with the high level of airflow through the GutterBrush Gutter Guard, most debris either dries out and blows away or self-composts and breaks down into small particles that wash down the rain gutter. Water will continue to flow through the gutter guard and your rain gutters or eavestroughs will not clog!  With GutterBrush in place, debris is suspended and  can no longer clump together and flow down the gutter clogging the outlet tube.  GutterBrush keeps the gutter flowing.
5. What about pine needles and maple seeds? Will these get caught in the gutter guard.
Although pine needles, maple seeds and other small debris may become caught in the top of GutterBrush Gutter Guard, they remain suspended in the gutter guard bristles where natural cycles of sun, rain, and abundant airflow help blow the debris from the gutter guard or promote rapid decomposition. Your rain gutters will remain protected and water will continue to flow through the gutter guard and your gutters or eavestroughs will not clog. !  Although some of these small items may become lodged in the brush, the bristles are directionally leading towards the center of the gutter and are directing the water into the gutter and not past the gutter.  Debris can not "clump together" and flow creating a clog.    Click below to read an article about pine needles

Excellent gutter protection!

“Our house is in a pine forest. If I didn't clean the gutters at least once a month, they were rendered useless by all the pine needles and pine cones. From the research I did, it sounded like no gutter system could cope with pine needles, and once it clogged, it was very hard to clean them. I read the reviews on the gutter brush, and I honestly didn't have high hopes. I bought enough to do the gutters that were the worst, and tested it out for a year. Wow! The whole time, the gutters kept flowing! Yes, pine needles get stuck in the gutter brush and form a layer on top of it that doesn't look very nice, but the water can still flow freely in the gutters and I no longer have issues with water damage from overflowing gutters. Instalation is super easy. Once you've cleaned the gutters, you can easily do a whole house in under 2 hours. If you need to pull them out to clean them, that's easy too. Just pull them out, shake them, and put them back in. It's not something I'd do too frequently though, because the bristles that are compressed by the gutter supports stay permanently bent after being that way for a year. All in all, these have worked great for me, and far surpassed my expectations! For reference, after my year long experiment, I ordered gutter brushes for the rest of the house. While the gutters that had the gutter brush were still flowing freely a year later, I removed 8 5-gallon buckets of pine needles and pine cones out of the gutters that did not have the gutter brush!!! Some people won't like the fact that you can see the top of the bristles and debris that gets trapped on top of them, but I don't care as long as the gutters keep working. In any case, it's still a lot easier to put a brush on an extension pole and brush the debris off while still standing on the ground if it bothers you that much. Overall, I'd highly recommend this product to anyone who is more concerned with function over looks.”

6. Don’t all rain gutter protection systems offer similar features? Why is GutterBrush Gutter Guard the best?
All rain gutter protection systems are not the same. Most are expensive to purchase, have add-on options to improve performance that further increase the cost and require expensive professional installation.  Many of them create a flat "debris covered" shelf that causes ice dams and causes water to backup over the fasca or back -up under the roof shingles and leak into the building. The GutterBrush Gutter Guard is different. It comes in different sizes and lengths to accommodate different rain gutter configurations, has no expensive add-on features, and can either be inexpensively installed by the homeowner who is comfortable climbing a ladder,  a professional handyman, landscaper or painter of your choice, or by a GutterBrush contractor found on our "find an installer" web page.  The GutterBrush Gutter Guard is the best rain gutter protection system on the market because it will not burden your rain gutters with extra weight, will prevent rain gutter clogging in heavy rainfall and snowfall and will also prevent entry to birds and animals. The GutterBrush Gutter Guard doesn't even touch the roof or fascia so it does not cause water leaks, ice dams or leak back-ups.   GutterBrush uses NO screws into the rain gutter or into your home’s roof. Best of all, the GutterBrush Gutter Guard does not compromise the integrity of any commercial or residential roofing system. GutterBrush Gutter Guard is THE RAIN GUTTER PROTECTION SYSTEM SOLUTION for every homeowner, and it improves the flow of the gutter in the winter too!
7. Can I just measure the length of my homes rain gutters and order the length I need?
Yes. The first thing to do, is determine which size of GutterBrush will fit your particular gutters best.   GutterBrush comes in 5 different sizes or diameters to fit all of the most common size gutters.  First, determine which size of GutterBrush is the right fit for your gutters. The GutterBrush Gutter Guard can be ordered in various lengths to fit your particular application. Depending on your size of gutter, we offer GutterBrush in different box size increments. Based on your total linear footage of gutter or eavestroughs, you can order a combination of these sizes to meet your needs. Finally, the GutterBrush Guys recommend ordering an additional 6 to 10 feet over your measurement to accommodate different rain gutter configurations, bends and other slight product waste during installation.  GutterBrush orders are fulfilled predominantly with three foot lengths which are inserted into the gutter one after the other filling the entire gutter from "end to end".  Each box also has a few 18" lengths so you can choose a smaller piece when you get to the end....and you do not have to cut GutterBrush because you can fold it back into itself to create that last piece.
8. I’ve been doing research on gutter protection systems and I am shocked by the astronomical cost of systems such as Gutter HelmetTM and GutterShieldTM. How does the GutterBrush Gutter Guard compare?
The GutterBrush Gutter Guard costs significantly less than almost all of our competition and it actually works better. We encourage you to shop the competition and see for yourself that our price, quality, and value cannot be beat. Quite simply, we offer the best rain gutter protection on the market today.  The GutterBrush advantage is the simplicity of design requiring no tools or fasteners.  The design enables GutterBrush to be installed far faster and easier than other systems.  Due to the fact that labor is the dominant cost factor, the speed and simplicity of GutterBrush translates to an inexpensive installed system that anyone can work with.  Other companies plunge hundreds of thousands of dollars into marketing their gutter protection products; not GutterBrush, we pass on the savings to you.   For those who are willing to install it themselves, GutterBrush is the best Do It Yourself Gutter Protection ( DIY Gutter Protection) because it is brilliantly simple.
9. How much does GutterBrush Gutter Guard cost?   GutterBrush prices are based on the size and the footage you purchase.  The more you purchase, the lower the prices per foot.

10. How can the GutterBrush Gutter Guard be so effective and inexpensive at the same time?

The simple design, self positioning, and quality manufacturing allows the GutterBrush Gutter Guard to be installed quickly and hassle-free. The GutterBrush Gutter Guard system is the best solution because it is based on a simple premise that prevents your rain gutter from clogging combined with the fact that the direction of the bristles is actually into the gutter.  Other systems create a "flat horizontal plane" that causes water to skip past, but GutterBrush's raised profile actually causes the bristles to draw water into the center of the gutter for better performance. There is no complicated assembly of the GutterBrush Gutter Guard system, no touching of roof material, no holes or fasteners are placed in or on your home’s roof, fascia or rain gutters, and it stays in your gutter year round. This means the GutterBrush can be purchased and installed for a small fraction of the cost of other, more complicated rain gutter protection devices. Plus, if the GutterBrush Gutter Guard ever requires maintenance, the system is easily and quickly removed, renewed, and re-installed with no damage to your valuable home. The simple yet incredibly effective design of the GutterBrush Gutter Guard combined with the ease of installation, allows us to pass considerable savings along to you.

11. How do I know what size GutterBrush Gutter Guard I need?
GutterBrush comes in five different sizes or diameters to fit the most common size gutters.  Within each GutterBrush size, multiple box sizes or lengths are also available. Our products are as follows.
Small for 4 inch gutters (actual brush diameter is 3.25")
Standard for 5 inch gutters (actual diameter is 4.25")
Oversized for 6 inch gutters (actual diameter is  5.25")
Extra Large for 7 inch gutters (actual diameter is 6.5")
Industrial for 8 inch gutters (actual brush diameter is 8")

The most common size of GutterBrush is Standard for 5 inch gutters.   The most common Style of gutter, by far,  is the K-Style gutter.  If you have a K-Style gutter, you simply measure your rain gutter across the top horizontally from the back of the rain gutter (at the fascia) to the outermost tip of the gutter. 5 inch = Standard  (most common) , 6 inch = Oversized.   To see pictures of "How to Measure",  click here to go to our "How to Measure" page.  If you have a K-style gutter, simply identify which size you have and order the appropriate GutterBrush size and footage.   If you have some other size or style of gutter, residential sizing samples and commercial sizing samples ( 2 different sample boxes) are available for free ,all we ask is for a portion of the shipping cost which is $ 9.95.  The residential sizing sample box (smp-res) contains 6" length samples of each of our 3 smallest residential size products.  The commercial sizing sample box (smp-com) contains 6" length samples of each of our 3 largest commercial size products.  Once again, if you have a K-style gutter you should not need sizing samples, however if you have some other style of gutter, the sizing samples box enables you to receive samples of 3 different sizes so that you can actually check the fit of each to determine the best most optimal GutterBrush product for your gutters.

11b. What is the best fit of GutterBrush into a gutter?

GutterBrush's Fit Criteria: The best most optimal performance is achieved when the brush fills the gutter as much as possible without overly compressing the bristles.  Additionally it is also desirable that the brush creates a "raised profile"  or "crowns" or extends out the top of the gutter about an inch or two.  The raised profile increases surface area and also allows that debris that may lay on the brush is up higher than the sides of the gutter so that the wind can purge.  Since GutterBrush was originally designed for K-style gutters, the fit is always perfect when you purchase the right size.   Other style gutters can be fit by using the most optimal size of GutterBrush that follows the GutterBrush Fit Criteria.  As the Fit Criteria States, it is desirable that GutterBrush fills the gutter and extends or "crowns" out the top to create a raised profile, however with gutters which have a width that differs from the length, it is not always possible to fill the entire gutter and create the raised profile.  In such cases, an on-site decision can be made with sizing samples to determine the most optimal fit.   GutterBrush will work fine even if it does not fill the entire gutter or if it does  not necessarily extend or "crown " out the top creating the raise profile.   While these characteristics are desirable to create the best performance, GutterBrush works just fine when it does not necessarily have all of these characteristics because GutterBrush is, in itself, a protected flow chanel.

12. When I install the GutterBrush Gutter Guard do my rain gutters and down spouts need to be replaced?
No. If your rain gutters and downspouts are properly installed, in good condition with an adequate number of downspouts, the GutterBrush can be installed inside your existing clean rain gutters with no tools or fasteners needed; just fill the entire gutter from "end to end".    There is also one other GutterBrush advantage:  If you do choose to purchase new gutters and downspouts, GutterBrush is very inexpensive because when new gutters are being fabricated, GutterBrush can be inserted into the new gutter while it is being fabricated from the ground, thereby saving a step because the gutters can be "hung" with GutterBrush already inside.
13. Do I need to cut the GutterBrush Gutter Guard for an exact fit?
No! The GutterBrush Gutter Guard does not need to be cut in fact no tools are necessary. The GutterBrush Gutter Guard ships in two lengths, 3 foot and 18 inches. When you come to the end of your rain gutter, if a section is too long, simply bend or fold the excess gutter guard brush back into itself to achieve the desired length. (installation tip: if the folded piece is a little bulky, install it and then spin it 1/4 turn so that the gutter contains the bulky portion.) GutterBrush gutter guards can also be bent around corners for a customized fit without cutting.
14. Does GutterBrush Gutter Guard work in combination with any roof surface & rain gutter type?
Yes! GutterBrush Gutter Guard is easily installed and will not interfere with or even touch roof surfaces such as Asphalt, Fiberglass, Cedar Shake, Slate, Tile, Rubber, Metal or other kinds of roof. It also works in combination with any rain gutter type including: K-Style, Half Round, Fascia Style, Copper, PVC, Aluminum, Galvanized or Stainless Steel. * GutterBrush Gutter Guard may be slightly more visible when used in 1/2 Round style gutters, but performs very well.  Any good roofer will tell you that the goal is to get the water controlled and off of the roof as quickly as possible which is why it is insane to install a gutter guard that even touches the roof, decreases the slope of the roof, or creates a horizontal shelf aimed at the top edge of the fascia.  Gutter Guards can burden roofs and even cause leaks by creating a "shelf" or barrier that in high winds or ice can cause water to be directed up under roof shingles, or back-up over the fascia and into the building.   Gutters are not absolutely necessary on a roof, but when connected to a roof they can be the cause of bad roof leakage.
15. If I have a problem with the installation or the product once it’s installed, who can help me?

As a result we will strive to solve your problem immediately with a call to our main number at +1 888-397-9433.  On staff we have over 25 years of roofing and exterior construction experience available to take your call and provide coaching.  Often customers will send pictures and discuss challenges; we work with them to help them understand any challenges as well as to help arrive at the simples most cost effective D.I.Y. or Do It Yourself solution.   When starting with a solution that requires no tools or fasteners, our coaching and suggestions tend to stay on the easier side of the spectrum.
16. Will I still need to clean my rain gutters or the GutterBrush Gutter Guard after installation? If so how do I clean them?
Your rain gutters will remain clear and flowing after the installation of GutterBrush Gutter Guard.   Gutters can continue to flow freely even with debris lodged in the bristles.  The debris and the bristles actively gather and direct water down into the gutter; however, if you ever do need to address gutter debris or a trouble spot, renewing your GutterBrush and rain gutters becomes as easy as removing a section of the GutterBrush Gutter Guard and giving it a quick shake or a brush with your hand or bang it onto a hard surface causing the debris to release; clean the gutter and then easily slide the GutterBrush back into place.  Other gutter solutions allow debris to flow within the gutter but not GutterBrush.  GutterBrush suspends any debris, therefore it now also becomes possible to perform minimal or partial maintenance to solve an issue.  GutterBrush customers also enjoy the fact that partial maintenance now also makes sense.
17. Will GutterBrush Gutter Guard have any impact on the problem of ice dams?
GutterBrush does not touch or get fastened to the roof so it has no effect on the roof whatsoever.  Ice dams are typically the result of a combination of improper insulation and a lack of soffit ventilation resulting in unnatural melting or a  “warm roof”  which becomes susceptible to ice dams and daily worsening of the condition.  GutterBrush does not cause icing or ice problems as it is entirely confined to the gutter and has no effect on the roof. However, GutterBrush decreases gutter icing and improves the performance of the gutter in the winter.  What many do not realize is that snow causes gutter clogs in an unprotected gutter.  Without GutterBrush, snow causes clogged winter gutters during melting or rain, and then the gutter fills with water and freezes to a solid block of ice that evening. With GutterBrush in the gutter, the snow tends to sit only atop of the brush and the flow channel stays protected from outlet tube to outlet tube, so that during rain or melting, the water is capable of flowing out the outlet tubes and down the down spouts, so you get fewer occurrences of icing.   Day by day, the condition actually improves (rather than worsening)  because the melting water can flow out rather than making the ice larger during slow melting.  Additionally, the mere fact that the black bristles which are exposed absorb the sun's warmth and transfer that heat to the wire core accelerating natural melting.  Click here to go to our Winter Performance page and see pictures and learn more.   GutterBrush is compatible and can be used in conjunction with heat tapes or heat melting wires.   GutterBrush customers express a great decrease in ice and icicles.
18. Gutter covers are large and unsightly. Is the GutterBrush Gutter Guard visible from the ground and will the gutter guard take away from the look of my home?
Although we think our product is the best on the market, we also believe it best if you never see it working. The GutterBrush Gutter Guard is manufactured of the highest quality materials that contribute to its low-profile application that keeps your rain gutters clean while remaining almost undetectable from ground level. For example, in lower level gutters you may just see the tips of the Gutter Guard bristles and in rain gutters 10-12 feet off of the ground the Gutter Guard will not be visible.  In most gutters, the black bristles extend about an inch to an inch and a half above the edge of the gutter and due to the height of most homes, they are not visible because of the angle of the viewer looking upward.   In cases where the bristles might be visible, a dark dip edge behind the brush further acts to decrease detectability.  Samples can be acquired to set in your gutter and view.

23. What is a K-Style Gutter?

The K-Style gutter just happens to be the most commonly produced gutter style available  and produced in custom long lengths roll formed out of the back of trucks or trailers in all neighborhoods in the USA.  This style of gutter, years ago was named after the upper portion of the script written K, because the curves of the gutter's face resemble the curved nature of the upper-half portion of the capitalized letter K when written in script.   GutterBrush is specifically designed in size to fit various sizes of K-style gutter; and GutterBrush also fits the ever so popular Fascia style gutter.   The K-style gutter is also often referred to as an OG or Ogee or K-Ogee.  OGEE is a word that often refers to any  architectural design that incorporates a double curve like an "S" which curves in both directions.   With respect to a K-style gutter,  the curve of the face of the gutter reverses direction like an "S" curve and resembles the aesthetic appeal of the double curve on a crown molding.   GutterBrush fits into all size and style gutters and functions well because it is, by itself, a protected flow channel.

       24.  Is GutterBrush compatible with my metal roof

Homeowners and contractors continue to explain regularly that they love GutterBrush for  their residential metal roof and commercial residential roof applications.   Other systems require intersecting  with the roof or being slid under the roof shingles, but with a metal roof they cant slide anything under the roof.   Customers and contractors are limited in the solutions available for residential and commercial metal roofs.   GutterBrush does not intersect or even touch the roof, therefore it is an excellent solution for gutters of metal roofs for residences and commercial buildings.
